Tunisian Clay Bead Garland
This striking clay bead garland is handmade by skilled women potters of Sejnane in Tunisia. The clay beads are wood-fired and assembled by hand. Each one is unique and the clay is marked by the fire. Hang these clay beads on the wall, coil in a bowl or add a rustic touch to a shelf.
-Materials: Local clay and natural twine
-Size approximately 24.5"L x 0.75" round clay beads
*Skilled artisans hand make and fire each set of clay beads, so natural color and size variations will occur.
Artisan Details
This product was designed as a collaboration between Bloomist + Sejnania.
In the hills of northern Tunisia, not far from the Mediterranean coastline, is Sejnane, a name now synonymous with both the place and an iconic style of pottery-making. Here, the traditional craft has passed from mother to daughter over the generations, with each artist contributing her own ideas to this collective design language.
Bloomist is proud to partner here with Zaineb Farhat and Sejnania on the production of their exclusive wood-fired clay beads — and by extension to play a small part in the protection and safeguarding of the centuries of communal knowledge and aesthetic judgment that are invested in every piece produced by these women artisans.
Sejnane pottery was recently classified as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, recognizing its important role in Tunisia's cultural heritage. This award helps protect the skills and subsequently livelihoods of the Sejnane women potters.
