River Stone Bookends (Set of 2)
These solid, architectural looking bookends are hewn from local stone by artisans at Atuto in Honduras and will never wobble or topple. When they’re not holding heavy books in place, they do double duty as simple sculptural objects in minimalist vignettes.
No two pieces are the same, the way nature designed it. The color ranges from light grey to darker charcoal tones to a light sand color with a rosy tint. However each pair is cut from one stone ensuring that the color is consistent within the pair.
-Materials: Sustainable river stone
-Dimensions: 3.5" x 2.5" x 6"
-Sold as a pair
Artisan Details
This product was designed as a collaboration between Bloomist + Atuto.
Founder Holland Millis has worked with skilled craft-workers in Honduras for decades. A former Peace Corps volunteer from North Carolina, he leads the Atuto group in Sabanagrande, Honduras, which produces pieces made from clay, metal, stone, fiber, and wood. In addition to creating opportunities for skilled employment in this mountainous region, where subsistence farming is a way of life for many, Atuto supports its Ambos Foundation.
In 1998, Hurricane Mitch devastated the country, leaving 1.5 million people homeless and causing billions of dollars of damage. (Unofficial rainfall totals during the hurricane in some places exceeded 70 inches.)
Ambos has a straightforward mission: to improve the lives of the people of rural Honduras at all stages of life, from providing children with school supplies to securing housing for the elderly.
Care
Goods made from clay, wood, cotton or other natural materials should be kept dry. To clean, dust with a lint-free cloth. Do not use water or cleaning products to avoid discoloration. Products made from stone + the Terra Cotta Frog Vase are water safe.
We recommend keeping all handmade goods out of direct sunlight.
